We are constantly thinking of ways to push ourselves by coming up with exciting techniques to solve and create problems we see around us in Innovations. This is how we are slowly but surely changing ourselves, the community we live in!

Our teachers asked us to choose two of these skills we feel confident about and two we lack.
I really thought about each of these skills and I tried to tie them in with my life to see how I represented them, then I realized... I have most of these skills but I'm wasting them and that needs to change. Every day we wake up and make thousands of decisions without even realizing it. I thought about all the days I have probably wasted away and will never get back and that's why the first skill I felt I lacked was Judgement and decision-making. Not that I can't make any decisions for myself or judge a situation right but I do need to recognize each day I have been given is a gift and I need to treat them like that, each and every awful, amazing, or even ok day. I need to judge what's really important and decide to act on it each day The other one that jumped out at me was the service orientation. I always use the excuse that I'm too busy to help out more in the community and give my time, but really it's just my laziness and selfishness that is holding me back. Don't get me wrong, I still volunteer through my school National Honor Society, but deep down I know that's not enough and I can do more. It just takes me sitting down and figuring a schedule that will give me time to simply go to a nursing home, or giving food to the homeless, and hopefully one day go on a big mission trip and make a difference outside of our community. I care about others needs deeply, but its time to show that more. There are still skills that I feel I possess and use though. Creativity, I feel, has always had a part in everything I do. Down to projects I turned in for school or a presentation, I have always tried to make it even a little different from everyone else and make it represent me. For the past two years art has been a major part of my life. I have always found it as a relaxing yet exciting thing to do. Expressing yourself without the words you struggle to find is the ultimate way to show your creativity, in my opinion. But creativity doesn't have to be in only art which is why I feel everyone has the potential to be creative if they just put their heart in it. Overall I feel each and every one of us can possess and utilize each one of these skills if we just put our minds and hearts into it. :) |
Passion Projects
For our next order of business in the innovations class we have decided to individually pursue problems we would like to see fixed. These passion projects are completely up to us but they must benefit someone, somehow.

The Final Passion Project :
The final passion project we are doing is for the kids.
My partner, Kacie, and I are attempting to break the gap between kids and teenagers. We both believe it is very important to be involved with all the the different age groups in our community. Kacie and I have partnered with Durbin Elementary and decided to help out and work with not only the kids but the teachers as well. We have been going to Durbin and doing anything and everything the teachers have requested of us so that they have more time to focus on the kids while still being around the kids. Then we spend time talking and playing around with the kids.
Overall this was one of my favorite projects to do, not just because I got to work with my sweet mom, but because of the impact it had on some of the most important people in our communities. Teachers haven't gotten the credit they deserve for all the hard work and impactful things they do for our youth. To become a teacher and dive into the lives of our future, in my opinion, is one of the most amazing things you could do to give back to the world. So helping them out in any way possible is something I will always be grateful to be a part of.
January 15- February 2 :
I decided to pursue recycling. I have always tried to live a green life and recycle at home, but I realized every day my school seems to fall short with the amount of recycling they can actually do. We sell more bottles in the lunch lines and in the vending machines than we have room in the limited three recycling containers the school has provided. I saw this as
This second semester, we had to personally decide what issues we would spend the next 3 weeks working to fix. After sharing my interests with the class I discovered two of my other classmates were in the same ballpark as me. We met up and decided to pursue recycling together. My partners, Riley and Kacie, both wanted to find ways to either increase awareness of recycling in the school or community, while I wanted to develop a more convenient solution to get people to recycle. We all decided to start within the school by increasing the number of recycling containers around the school and getting the clubs at HSE to help pick these bins up. The plan is to spread the awareness starting with the clubs but then eventually getting the student body more involved by creating a segment for our school news station, HSETV, about recycling.
So far we have met with our school's administration to talk about increasing the number of recycle bins in at least every classroom. It was approved pretty quickly and the next step is getting cheap cardboard boxes to hold each teachers recycling. The GREAT news is many clubs have responded to our emails about helping pick up the increased amount of recycle and are willing to help! Through this process we actually met another student also interested in this same topic and she has now become a part of our team. With this student's help and resources we now have another sixteen recycle containers around school!

We took another step forward after this and moved on to focusing on the kids and how to get the parents information about the Swim School. We thought of having a swim night with an elementary to promote Goldfish while having a fundraiser for the elementary. Now the Swim school and elementary are in the process of setting up a date for the swim night!
